SENKO launches a detachable version of the award-winning Metallic PIC Connector (MPC)
Boston, MA March 25th, 2024 – SENKO, a pioneering force in Co-Packaged Optical Communication, continues its journey toward global leadership in optical interconnects. Today marks a significant milestone as the company launches a ground-breaking innovation: a detachable version of its cutting-edge high-density Metallic PIC Connector (MPC).
This latest advancement revolutionizes optical communications by introducing detachability to PIC connectors, addressing crucial production and reliability challenges in the manufacture of high-volume co-packaged optics. The detachability feature allows fiber-optic cables to be disconnected and re-connected to the PIC during the packaging process. It is no longer necessary for fiber-optic cables and connectors to withstand the solder reflow process. It also allows cables to be replaced during service. This lowers life-cycle cost for next-generation optical switches by enabling ‘hot swap’ capability.
Metallic PIC connectors, crafted from stamped metallic optical benches, represent the pinnacle of optical interconnect technology. They feature arrays of micro-mirrors that can fold, focus, or expand light beams passing between photonic devices and single-mode fibers, polarization-maintaining fibers, or multimode fibers. SENKO now boasts a comprehensive range of technology-driven products from on-board optics and throughout the entire network infrastructure.
At the heart of these connectors lie the patent-protected Metallic Optical Benches (MOBs), manufactured using SENKO’s proprietary stamping process. This innovative technique creates precise microstructures in metallic optical components, offering a cost-effective, high-volume alternative. The result is enhanced robustness and reliability, surpassing plastic injection molded components in performance and durability.
The compact design of the Metallic PIC connectors facilitates easy assembly onto ribbon fiber, allowing for seamless alignment from the tiles of multi-chip modules to the Tx/Rx ribbon cable in confined spaces, without compromising on dimensions. This industry-leading robust opto-mechanical mating sets a new standard for optical connectivity.
To ensure seamless integration and optimal performance, Senko is collaborating with leading OSAT’s, Foundries, and Test and Measurement companies to ensure maximum compatibility. This collaborative approach enables reliable and repeatable high-volume coupling to the Photonics Integrated Circuit (PIC) for Co-Packaged Optics, Next-generation Pluggable Transceivers and Custom Sensors.
SENKO’s introduction of the detachable Metallic PIC connector heralds a new era in optical interconnect technology, empowering industries with unprecedented flexibility, reliability, and performance. As SENKO continues to push the boundaries of innovation, the future of optical connectivity looks brighter than ever before.
