SENKO at COP29: Sustainability for AI Data Centers

Cop29 Group PhotoAt COP29, held in Azerbaijan, SENKO proudly joined global leaders in addressing climate change and advancing sustainability. Invited by the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, SENKO’s Associate Senior Technologist, Takeshi Kasai, showcased how innovative fiber optic solutions are critical to building a sustainable, connected future.

This year’s conference focused on global strategies to reduce emissions, transition to clean energy, and protect the environment. SENKO’s participation underscored its leadership in aligning cutting-edge technology with sustainability goals, guided by its PReSS framework: Performance, Reliability, Scalability, and Sustainability.

SENKO’s Commitment to Sustainable Connectivity

As data centers grow and global networks expand, the environmental impact of fiber optic deployments—particularly in plastic use—cannot be ignored. SENKO is addressing this challenge through:

  • Reducing Plastic Consumption: By leveraging Very Small Form Factor (VSFF) connectors like the SN® and SN®-MT, SENKO reduces plastic use by 43% compared to traditional MPO connectors.
  • Eliminating Redundant Components: The VSFF design eliminates the need for MPO to LC breakout modules, minimizing material usage across large-scale deployments.
  • Real-World Impact: A case study of a 3,456-fiber intra-data center trunk cable deployment showed that SENKO’s VSFF solution reduced plastic weight by 20.09kg, cutting carbon emissions by 366.42 CO2eq/kg.

This reduction not only decreases the environmental footprint but also highlights how high-density, sustainable solutions can drive efficiency in modern networks.

Driving Innovation in Performance and Reliability

The rise of generative AI and quantum computing has amplified the need for robust, high-performing networks. SENKO ensures the highest standards in performance and reliability through:

  • Enhanced Signal Integrity: VSFF connectors are engineered to minimize insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL), critical for high-bandwidth transceivers like 400G and 800G.
  • Hygiene Standards: Contaminants as small as 2-15 microns can degrade network performance. SENKO adheres to IEC standards to maintain clean and reliable connections, reducing network failures and improving signal quality.
  • Rigorous Testing: SENKO connectors comply with GR-326-CORE and GR-1435 standards, undergoing environmental and mechanical stress testing to ensure long-term reliability in hyperscale data centers.

Scalability for the Networks of Tomorrow

With exponential growth in data traffic, networks must scale efficiently without compromising performance or sustainability. SENKO is at the forefront of scalable solutions:

  • High-Density Connectivity: SN®-MT connectors allow higher fiber densities with reduced complexity, while MPO EZ-WAY connectors enable belly-to-belly installations, increasing rack space efficiency.
  • Future-Ready Automation: SENKO’s automated patch panels enable software-driven physical layer management, streamlining connectivity, reducing human error, and optimizing resource use.

SENKO also supports modern network architectures, such as the leaf-and-spine model, which improves scalability and redundancy in data centers. By adopting future-proofed designs, SENKO ensures networks can grow alongside technological advancements.

Showcasing Leadership at COP29

At COP29, SENKO demonstrated how sustainable fiber optic solutions can bridge the gap between environmental responsibility and technological progress. SENKO’s participation highlighted the global importance of integrating sustainability into the core of technological development.

The company’s efforts not only reduce carbon emissions and material waste but also enable networks to meet the growing demands of AI, cloud computing, and quantum technologies.
