Application of LC Duplex Connectors in Modern Fiber Optic Networks

LC duplex connectors are compact, high-performance connectors widely used in modern fiber optic networks. The LC connector, known for its small form factor, allows more connections per unit area, making it ideal for high-density applications in telecommunications, data centers, and enterprise network environments. These connectors excel in applications where space-saving, reliability, and ease of installation are critical. They are frequently found in patch panels, transceivers, and media converters across a range of network environments. LC duplex connectors, which hold two fibers, are particularly favored for full-duplex communications where data can be transmitted and received simultaneously.

Duplex LC connectors can be manufactured with a Type-A polarity or a Type-B polarity. Type-A polarity is a straight joint where Fibre 1 is routed to Fibre 1 on the other side. This is usually deployed in telco FTTH networks. Type-B polarity is a crossover joint where Fibre 1 is routed to FIbre 2 on the other side. This is usually deployed in full-duplex networks to connect the Transmit (Tx) port to the Receive (Rx) port.

As the number of connections increases, the management of Type-A and Type-B polarity patch cords becomes more complicated. Polarity changeable LC Duplex connectors allow network operators to manage only 1 type of connector and freely change the polarity to suit the network requirement.

 

Types of Polarity Changeable LC Duplex Connectors

Polarity refers to maintaining proper signal flow from the transmitter (Tx) on one end of the fiber link to the receiver (Rx) on the other. Ensuring correct polarity is essential to prevent signal errors and maintain optimal performance in fiber optic networks. LC duplex connectors generally allow for polarity reversal without tools, but the exact process can vary depending on the connector type.

While the general structure of LC duplex connectors remains consistent, different types have emerged to address specific needs in various network configurations. Here’s an overview of the primary LC duplex connector types:

  1. Standard LC Duplex Connectors
    • These connectors feature a clip that holds two LC connectors in a duplex format. Their popularity stems from their ease of installation and compatibility with many fiber optic components. They are generally available in both single-mode (SM) and multi-mode (MM) versions to meet different network requirements.
  2. Switchable Uniboot LC Duplex Connectors
    • Designed for high-density applications, Uniboot LC connectors use a single cable with two fibers, reducing cable bulk in crowded environments. This design is particularly beneficial in data centers where airflow and cooling efficiency are essential. Uniboot connectors also allow for quick polarity changes, simplifying field modifications and maintenance.
  3. Flippable Uniboot LC Duplex Connectors
    • This connector is also designed based on the Uniboot LC connector using a single cable with two fibers. Unlike the Switchable Uniboot LC Duplex Connector, the connector body does not need to be dismantled to flip the connector polarity. Instead, the connector tab is turned to flip the connector polarity.

Changing Polarity in the Field

Steps to Change Polarity with Standard LC Duplex Connectors

  1. Remove the Clip: Most LC duplex connectors feature a removable clip that holds the two connectors in place. Use your fingers or a suitable tool to gently remove this clip.
  2. Swap the Connectors: Once the clip is removed, swap the connectors so that the Tx and Rx connectors switch places.
  3. Reattach the Clip: Secure the clip back onto the connectors to hold them in the correct duplex orientation.

Steps to Change Polarity with Switchable Uniboot LC Duplex Connectors

  1. Remove the Cover: Release the cover by lifting the two tabs protruding from the rear of the cover where it meets the main connector body. Spread the side wings out while you are pushing up on the tabs.
  2. Rotate the Connectors: Swap the position of the fibers to change polarity within the connector housing.
  3. Lock the Connector: Re-engage the locking mechanism to secure the fibers in place, ensuring the connectors are oriented properly.

Steps to Change Polarity with Flippable Uniboot LC Duplex Connectors

  1. Identify Connector Polarity: Identify the polarity of the connector by observing the image on the connector body which indicates if it is a regular polarity or a crossed polarity.
  2. Rotate to Reverse Polarity: Turn the connector latch to change the polarity without the need to open the connector housing.
